CHENNAI — Residents along Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and across the city can now book pickup services for bulk furniture waste, including sofas, mattresses, tables, and other large items that don't fit in regular household garbage bins.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), in partnership with Urbaser, offers a dedicated bulk waste collection service to tackle the growing problem of furniture and oversized waste items being dumped illegally on roadsides and in open spaces.

How to Book Bulk Waste Pickup

Residents can book bulk furniture waste pickup through multiple channels:

1. Mobile App (Easiest)
Download the "Chennai One" mobile app or "GCC Smart City" app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. These apps allow you to book bulk waste pickup directly from your phone with photo uploads and real-time tracking.

2. Online Website
Visit chennaicorporation.gov.in or urbaser.in/chennai and navigate to the "Bulk Waste Collection" section. Fill in your details including address, type of waste, and preferred date.

3. Call Center
Call GCC helpline at 044-25619206 or Urbaser customer care to speak with a representative who will schedule your bulk waste pickup. Have your address and description of items ready.

4. Ward Office
Visit your local ward office and submit a request in person. This allows you to provide detailed information about the size and type of furniture to be disposed.

Quick Contact Information:
• GCC Helpline: 044-25619206 (Main)
• Urbaser Chennai: Check zone-specific numbers
• Online: Visit chennaicorporation.gov.in or urbaser.in/chennai

What Items Can Be Picked Up

The bulk waste collection service covers large household items including:

  • Furniture: Sofas, tables, chairs, beds, cupboards
  • Mattresses: Single, double, queen, king size
  • Appliances: Refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners
  • Electronics: Televisions, computers, printers
  • Construction debris: Limited quantities from home renovations
  • Garden waste: Tree branches, large plant debris

Preparing Items for Pickup

To ensure smooth collection, residents should:

  • Keep items at easily accessible locations (ground floor, near building entrance)
  • Dismantle large items if possible (removes table legs, detaches shelves)
  • Cover furniture with plastic or cloth to prevent debris during handling
  • Separate metals and electronics if applicable
  • Ensure clear access path for collection vehicle

Service Charges and Fees

While basic bulk waste collection may be free for residential users, commercial entities and large quantities may incur charges. Contact GCC or Urbaser for specific pricing details based on your location and waste volume.

⚠️ Important:
• Book at least 2-3 days in advance for scheduling
• Don't dump furniture on roadsides (liable for fines)
• Large quantities may require separate appointment
• E-waste should be handled through certified e-waste handlers

Benefits of Proper Bulk Waste Disposal

By using the official GCC-Urbaser service, residents contribute to:

  • Maintaining clean roads and public spaces in OMR
  • Proper recycling of reusable materials
  • Reducing illegal dumping that causes visual pollution
  • Preventing fire hazards from accumulated furniture waste
  • Supporting the city's overall waste management infrastructure

Common Issues and Solutions

Issue: Collection not done as scheduled
Solution: Call the helpline to confirm appointment and request priority rescheduling

Issue: Large items that can't be moved
Solution: Request on-site dismantling or use the fire and rescue services for heavy lifting assistance (with proper permissions)
